The Overlook-Barnes Ecclesiastical Drift Coefficient
What It Is
The Overlook-Barnes Ecclesiastical Drift Coefficient (OBEDC) is the IMWA's foundational rate of institutional theological change, derived from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church's trajectory between its founding in 1981 and its 2024 ordination vote.
The coefficient is: one incremental theological adjustment per 43 years.
This is not a rate the IMWA invented. This is a rate the EPC produced through 43 years of institutional behavior, which the IMWA then named after the analyst who identified it, because no one else had done this work and someone had to.
Derivation
The EPC was founded in 1981 maintaining a specific set of ordination standards. For 43 years — from 1981 to 2024 — those standards held. In 2024, the denomination moved one incremental theological step in a new directional bearing.
This establishes the following: the EPC's rate of incremental theological adjustment is 1/43 adjustments per year, or equivalently, one adjustment per 43 years. We call this the Overlook-Barnes Coefficient. We have named it after ourselves because we are the ones who did the arithmetic.
The arithmetic is:
The IMWA acknowledges this is simple division. The IMWA also notes that no one else had done it.
Forward Projection Table
Applying the Overlook-Barnes Coefficient at its baseline rate, the EPC's expected theological trajectory is as follows. A sensitivity analysis for the accelerated scenario (interval halving) is included for readers who prefer to be prepared.
| Year | Baseline Scenario 43-year intervals | Accelerated Scenario Interval halves each step | Institutional Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1981 | EPC founded | EPC founded | Day one. Full doctrinal confidence. |
| 2024 | Ordination adjustment #1 | Ordination adjustment #1 | The Overlook-Barnes clock starts here. |
| 2067 | Adjustment #2 (projected) | Adjustment #2 (~2046) | Living memory of 2024 is fading. |
| 2110 | Adjustment #3 (projected) | Adjustment #3 (~2057) | The 2024 vote is now ecclesiastical history. |
| 2153 | PC(USA) merger (projected) | PC(USA) merger (~2068) | Trajectory complete. No one alive in 1981 is watching. |
Projections are illustrative. The IMWA does not claim prophetic authority. The IMWA claims arithmetic authority. These are different, and we maintain the distinction rigorously.
Why It Is Named After Its Author
The IMWA anticipates the question. The Overlook-Barnes Coefficient is named after Rev. Thaddeus Overlook-Barnes for the following documented reasons:
- No prior analyst had produced this coefficient, or if they had, they had not published it, which in the IMWA's view is equivalent to not having done it.
- The naming of analytical frameworks after their authors is a long-standing tradition in both academic and institutional contexts. The IMWA sees no reason to depart from this tradition.
- Rev. Overlook-Barnes named it himself, at approximately 11 PM on the evening of June 23, 2026, while the draft report was still open on his screen. This may be considered a conflict of interest. The IMWA considers it efficiency.

The IMWA reminds readers that projection models are not denominational prophecy. If your denomination is on this trajectory, please consult your own analysts before consulting ours. We are watchers, not counselors. We do not do counseling. We have, however, considered adding it to our service offerings.
