IMWA Trend Analysis: At Current Rates, EPC Will Have Completed Full Theological Journey by 2153; We Have Done the Math

The Institute for Ministry Watch Accountability applies rigorous projection modeling to the EPC's recent ordination vote and arrives at conclusions that the denomination's own General Assembly has not yet considered.

The Institute for Ministry Watch Accountability has reviewed MinistryWatch’s coverage of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church’s recent vote to permit ordination of celibate same-sex attracted pastors and has identified what we believe to be a significant and underreported quantitative dimension to this story. MinistryWatch has done the work of describing the vote. We have done the work of modeling its inevitable arithmetic trajectory. These are different and complementary services, and we offer ours without charge.

The Baseline Data

For purposes of our projection model, we have established the following baseline: The EPC was founded in 1981. For approximately 43 years, the denomination maintained its prior ordination standards. It has now moved one incremental step in a new directional bearing. This establishes a rate of change. The rate of change is, specifically, one incremental theological adjustment per 43 years. This is our foundational figure. We call it the Overlook-Barnes Ecclesiastical Drift Coefficient, and we have named it after ourselves because no one else has done this work.

The Projection Table

Applying the Overlook-Barnes Coefficient forward from the 2024 vote, IMWA’s modeling division has produced the following trajectory. By approximately 2067, the EPC will vote to permit ordination of actively partnered same-sex clergy, consistent with a 43-year interval. By 2110, the denomination will have adopted a formal liturgy for the blessing of unions. By 2153, the EPC will have merged with the PC(USA), completing what one MinistryWatch-quoted elder referred to, perhaps prophetically, as the “echo” of an earlier institutional trajectory. We note that by 2153, there will likely be no one alive who remembers the 2024 vote, which presents a separate problem for institutional memory that falls outside the scope of this analysis but which we flag for completeness.

A Sensitivity Analysis

We acknowledge that our model assumes a constant drift rate, which may not hold. Acceleration is possible. If the EPC’s next adjustment occurs in, say, 22 years rather than 43 — representing a halving of the interval, consistent with standard exponential decay patterns observed in other institutional contexts — the timeline compresses considerably. Under the accelerated scenario, merger with the PC(USA) occurs as early as 2101, a full half-century ahead of our baseline projection. We present this not as a prediction but as a scenario. The distinction is important and we maintain it rigorously.

What MinistryWatch Got Right, and What It Left on the Table

MinistryWatch’s coverage competently reported the vote, the dissenting elder’s historical analogy, and the denomination’s stated reasoning. This is conventional accountability journalism and we do not fault it. What MinistryWatch did not provide was a projection table, a drift coefficient, or an estimated merger date with any specific mainline body. The Institute exists to fill precisely this gap. We would further note that MinistryWatch’s article contained no scenario modeling whatsoever — not even a conservative scenario, a baseline scenario, and an aggressive scenario presented in a color-coded table. This is a significant methodological omission, and we have filed a formal notation in our internal records accordingly.

Conclusion and Institutional Posture

The IMWA does not take a position on the EPC’s vote itself. Our mandate is the watching of watchers, the modeling of trajectories, and the production of projection tables that others have declined to produce. We assess MinistryWatch’s coverage as substantively sound but arithmetically incomplete. The Overlook-Barnes Coefficient will be updated annually or upon the occurrence of additional incremental theological adjustments, whichever comes first. We have set a calendar reminder for 2067.

The Institute for Ministry Watch Accountability reminds its readers that all projection models are illustrative and should not be used for purposes of denominational planning, ecclesiastical merger negotiations, or the scheduling of ordination examinations beyond a 20-year horizon. The IMWA is not responsible for events occurring after 2153.
